WWE SummerSlam 2026 Recap

One of WWE’s premiere premium live events hit Minneapolis, Minnesota, this past weekend as the 2026 SummerSlam took place over two nights at U.S. Bank Stadium (normally home to the Minnesota Vikings). Over the course of twelve matches, championships were defended, feuds settled and some major WWE superstars returned to steer the course of the company over the coming months.

On Night One, the show kicked off with Liv Morgan defending the Women’s World Championship against the reigning Queen of the Ring Iyo Sky. Despite the “Genius of the Sky” using all her high-flying skills to bring her down, Morgan used the numbers game to her advantage as fellow Judgement Day members Raquel Rodriguez and Roxanne Perez came to her aid, leading to Sky’s defeat and Morgan retaining the title.

Following his victory at WrestleMania, Roman Reigns reunited with his cousins, Jimmy Uso, Jey Uso and Jacob Fatu in a new version of the Bloodline. Former Bloodline member Solo Sikoa allied with LA Knight and Royce Keys to address their assorted feuds with the Bloodline in a six-man tag match against the Usos and Fatu. It was an uphill climb, but Solo’s team managed to get the win over the Bloodline, signaling that Reigns still has work to do getting his faction all on the same page.

After bringing an end to the careers of Goldberg, John Cena and AJ Styles, Gunther and his ego have come to blows with SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis. Aldis, who hasn’t been in the ring in years, gave Gunther everything he had, with the crowd and his family behind him. It took two vicious sleeper holds from Gunther before Aldis was forced to tap out. Gunther got the win, but Aldis got the respect of the fans, leaving the ring to cheers.

Next up was a six-woman tag team match between Fatal Influence (Jacy Jayne, Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid) and the team of Paige, Brie Bella and Nikki Bella. After Fatal Influence won, via a Jacy Jayne pin to Paige, the Bella Twins turned on their teammate, attacking her in the ring and turning heel in the process.

Reigning Undisputed WWE Champion CM Punk defended his title against former champion Cody Rhodes next. Both men gave the other everything they had, both using their finishing moves without achieving a pin. The turning point came when Randy Orton, absent since his loss to Rhodes at WrestleMania in April, appeared and hit Rhodes with his RKO finisher. Punk capitalized on the attack to pin Rhodes and retain the belt.

The main event of Night One was a Hell in a Cell match to continue ongoing feud between newcomer (and current King of the Ring) Oba Femi and WWE legend Brock Lesnar. Locked in a cage with no disqualifications or count-outs allowed, Lesnar applied multiple F-5 finishers on Femi, as well as a tombstone pile driver on the exposed boards under the ring. None of this was enough to pin Femi, who fought back at every turn before finally using his Fall from Grace finisher to drop Lesnar and get the pin. After the match, Lesnar embraced Femi, announcing him as the future of WWE and retiring from pro wrestling.

Night Two began with a match to determine the next number-one contender for CM Punk’s Undisputed Championship. Before the match between Sami Zayn and Finn Balor could begin, Nick Aldis (back at his post as SmackDown general manager) arrived to announce a couple changes to the match. What was meant to be a one-on-one match was now a fatal four-way, with the addition not just of Gunther but a returning Kevin Owens. A shocked Zayn embraced his friend, who had been out with an injury for over a year, and they then proceeded to pummel each other (and Gunther and Balor). It came down to Zayn vs. Owens in the finale, with Owens getting the final upper hand to pin his friend and become the number one contender.

Next was the match between reigning United States Champion Trick Williams and his challenger, a returning Baron Corbin. Corbin, eager to prove himself after several years away from the WWE, evaded all of Williams’ dirty tactics to ultimately get the pin and win the United States Championship for himself.

The third match of the night was a five-way ladder match between Chelsea Green, Charlotte Flair, Jade Cargill, Lash Legend and Tiffany Stratton. With current Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley injured, the five women were competing to take the role of Interim Women’s Champion. As with most ladder matches, all five women came close to retrieving the championship belt, but by the time all four other competitors were out of commission, Chelsea Green was the last woman standing, scaling the ladder to claim the championship.

For weeks, the Judgement Day have claimed that the “very nice very evil” Danhausen stole $100,000 from them. This back and forth culminated at SummerSlam with a “Human Monies on a Pole” match between Danhausen and Dominik Mysterio. Interference from both sides (JD McDonagh for Mysterio, Joe Hendry and a trio of “Minihausens” for Danhausen) kept both wrestlers at bay, until Danhausen finally put Mysterio down for good with some well-placed pyro. Danhausen retrieved the money and claimed victory, then promptly doled his newly won cash out to the crowd.

The penultimate match of the night was for the Intercontinental Championship between reigning champ Penta and challenger Chad Gable. After abandoning his El Grande Americano luchador persona, Gable has been attempting to rebuild his image in WWE. The two seasoned wrestlers put on an excellent match, but once Gable got Penta in an ankle lock submission hold, the champion luchador was forced to tap down, handing Gable his first singles championship in his decade-plus career in WWE.

There hasn’t been any love lost between Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins over the past twelve years, and their long-time rivalry finally came to a head in the main event of Night Two, with Reigns’ World Heavyweight Championship on the line. Fueled by their mutual hatred for each other, Rollins and Reigns exchanged devastating blows in and out of the ring. Evenly matched at every turn, it simply came down to a matter of timing as Reigns evaded Rollins’ curb stomp finisher at the last second and retaliated with a spear move to put Rollins in a pin and retain the title. After the match, the two men faced off once more, culminating in a solemn fist bump to signify the end of their long feud.
