Welcome to the Series Snapshot, a weekly deep dive into the shows topping the streaming charts.

Netflix’s new remake of Little House on the Prairie has kept its spot at the top for a second week running, with I Will Find You taking a close second. The series has gained some traction as viewers recognize and appreciate the differences from the original, chiefly a change in dramatic tone and presentation. Where the original 1974 version presented episodic, feel-good family stories, the new iteration is heavily serialized, and presents a grittier survival epic amidst an unforgiving frontier. Great care has been taken in terms of historical accuracy, and where the old Little House tended to gloss over race relations and Native American perspectives, the new creative team worked closely with cultural consultants from the Osage people to further build the world out with authenticity. The core cast who play the Ingalls family, Luke Bracey, Crosby Fitzgerald, Skywalker Hughes, and Alice Halsey as Laura Ingalls, are also consistently pointed out as excellent and real, despite some of the show's overly wholesome moments. Little House on the Prairie was created by Rebecca Sonnenshine and has been renewed for a second season.

For Hulu, Love Island UK clinches a win after the algorithm-favored General Hospital won last week. The reality series had its finale on July 27th, and contestants Julia Majchrzak and Lorenzo Alessi were declared the winners, after forty-seven days on the island. Season thirteen has done much to break from form for the highly rated final episodes. Viewers were delighted with a shocking “double-exit” twist that left the season with three final couples instead of four for the first time in the series’ history. Host Maya Jama has seen her star power grow with the reality dating show's cultural impact, and does well to balance the turbulent contentions of Love Island’s couples. Love Island UK will return for a special Love Island: All Stars in January, which will feature fan favorite contestants from past seasons, and launch its fourteenth season in June of 2027. Love Island UK was created by Richard Cowles, Robert Fromage, and Tony Wood.

Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon’s third season continues to dominate uncontested on HBO, now for six consecutive weeks. Ratings have remained exceptionally high for season three, after it premiered with a massive payoff for viewers in the form of a sweeping, visually spectacular battle. As the season has pressed on, it hasn’t let up on tension and plot. And the show continues to reward fans, who recently celebrated the unceremonious screen-demise of a love-to-hate character. Critically acclaimed actors Emma D’Arcy, Tom Glynn-Carney, Olivia Cooke, and Fabian Frankel have stolen the show in recent episodes, with D’Arcy in particular receiving specific praise for one of the greatest performances in all of Game of Thrones. With just two episodes left including the finale on August 9, House of the Dragon’s third season is looking towards a perfect run, with the fourth and final season slated for 2028. House of the Dragon was created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal.

Over at Amazon, spy action-comedy Ride or Die, starring Octavia Spencer and Hannah Waddingham once again bests Legally Blonde prequel Elle. The series’ success hinges on the lightning-in-a-bottle dynamic of Spencer and Waddingham; the two play best friends, but after Judith (Waddingham) reveals her double-life as a spy and assassin, Debbie (Spencer) is immediately rapt up in a high-stakes thrilling adventure throughout Europe. Debbie’s lack of experience is a frequent source of comedy, and Bill Nighy steals a few scenes as Judith’s deadpan boss, “The Director”. Ride or Die is also commended for its technical elements, like stunning high fashion choices for its main characters, and spectacular European backdrops, and when paired with clever dialogue, can be thought of as a cross between Killing Eve and Emily in Paris. Amazon has yet to make an official announcement as to whether Ride or Die will get a second season, but after binge-dropping with a cliffhanger ending, both audiences and the creative team have expressed enthusiasm for continuing. Ride or Die also stars Ed Skrein and Sylvia Hoeks, and was created by Tessa Coates.

Apple TV’s original dystopian sci-fi series Silo has had a phenomenal run in its third season. The series once again takes the top watched spot on the platform with a healthy lead. Silo has maintained near-perfect scores across several popular aggregates, and its current season is the highest rated yet. After facing backlash around pacing issues in season two, season three has upgraded the stakes and made each moment underground feel more important, even sometimes extending sequences from the book series by Hugh Howey from a few pages into full episodes. Led by a tour-de-force performance from Rebecca Ferguson, season three has begun the process of answering many questions and mysteries that have gone unanswered until now, which feels satisfying to fans who have invested in the series. Silo also stars Common, Tim Robbins, and Harriet Walter, and at Comic-Con last week, Apple TV confirmed a season four premiere for the summer of 2027. Silo was created by Graham Yost, and will conclude its third season September 4.

Disney’s new historical docuseries, Pompeii: Out of Time with Tom Hiddleston is the viewership winner this week, ahead of Bluey and X-Men ‘97. The three-part National Geographic series has been met with mostly positive reviews, and sees Hiddleston play “time-travel investigator”, transported back to ancient Rome, to witness the cataclysmic volcano eruption that would wipe out the city of Pompeii, and the ensuing aftermath. Out of Time presents the hypothetical experiences of Roman citizens who were present to witness the events, according to historical records. Tom Hiddleston, who studied classics at Cambridge, delivers a passionate, heartfelt narration that has been widely praised. Hiddleston, as well as co-creators Kevin R. Wright and Tom Barbor-Might, felt that emotionally anchoring the series through stories would help audiences engage with and understand the events more viscerally, and hired veteran writers Jessica Ruston and Mark Ravenhill to pen the fictional first-hand accounts. The creative team has heavily teased more docuseries in the pipeline, but no official confirmation from Disney yet.
