Box Office Round Up - 7-30-2018

Tom Cruise accepted the mission, and it was a resounding success. Mission Impossible: Fallout took the number one spot over the weekend with $62 million. This was the highest opening weekend for a Mission Impossible film, and the second largest debut for Tom Cruise behind 2005’s War of the Worlds. Considering Fallout is the last big blockbuster for the summer, expect this one to have some healthy legs. CAA should be happy as they represent Cruise and writer/director Christopher McQuarrie.

In second place with $15 million was Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again. The musical sequel dropped 57% and has a domestic cume of $70 million. That’s a pretty steep drop considering the film is a decent counter programmer from the other films in the box office.

Dropping 61% from first place and into third was The Equalizer 2 with $14 million for the weekend. The Denzel Washington led sequel has now made $64 million domestically.

In fourth place with $12 million was the animated sequel Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation. With only three weeks in release the film has now made $120 million domestically and $165 million overseas for a worldwide total of $284 million.

Coming into fifth place was Warner Brothers’ animated spin off Teen Titans Go! To the Movies. Analysts expected the film to do a little better than its $11 million take. But it’s not all bad, as the film only cost about $10 million to make.

Falling out of the top five were Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp and Disney/Pixar’s Incredibles 2, which fell to sixth and seventh places respectively. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom came in eighth and the Dwayne Johnson vehicle Skyscraper fell to ninth place. And in tenth place, is The First Purge. Interesting note for the weekend – nine of the top ten were either sequels or spin offs.

Next Week: Disney will push some nostalgia buttons with Christopher Robin, Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon get into the spy business with The Spy Who Dumped Me and kids with superpowers run through a YA dystopia in The Darkest Minds. Can they take on Mission Impossible: Fallout?
