Box Office Round Up - 6-4-2018

It was a rough weekend for Solo: A Star Wars Story, which continued to underperform with $29 million. This is a drop of 65%. And while Star Wars fans are acting like this is some sort of apocalypse for the franchise (some gleeful and some not), I’d wager it’ll be business at usual at Disney (you can read my further thoughts on Star Wars at the box office here). So far the film has made $149 million domestically and $115 million internationally.

Deadpool 2 came in second place with $23 million – the film’s domestic cume is now $255 million and it continues to perform well overseas, with a worldwide gross of $598 million.

In third place with $12 million is newcomer Adrift. The Shailene Woodley lost at sea drama was an obvious counter programmer to the big blockbusters, and performed about as expected. Going forward it’ll be tough for the film to keep pace though, as it has a barrage of new blockbusters to contend with. But the movie didn’t cost a lot so it’ll probably be just fine. WME should be pleased with this as they represent Director Baltasar Kormakur and writers Aaron and Jordan Kandell. While star Shailene Woodly is repped by Hyperion Talent, and CAA reps Sam Claflin.

Avengers: Infinity War dropped to fourth place with $10 million, it’s sixth week in release with a domestic total of $643 million. Overseas it’s worldwide total is now $1.3 billion all it needs is $35 million more to be the fourth film ever to make $2 billion.

Finishing the top five is Book Club with $6.8 million. The film has now grossed $47 million domestically.

Outside the top five – microbudget sci-fi action film Upgrade took sixth place, dropping to seventh was Melissa McCarthy’s Life of the Party, falling to eighth place was the Gabrielle Union home invasion thriller Breaking In. Coming in ninth with a big ole’ belly flop was the Jackass spinoff Action Point. And falling to tenth place was Overboard.

Next Week: The ladies plan a heist in Ocean’s 8, Jodie Foster operates a hospital for criminals in the future in Hotel Artemis, and Toni Collette is gonna scare everyone who goes to see Hereditary.
