Box Office Round Up - 5-29-2018
It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Solo: A Star Wars Story took number one for the holiday weekend. What is sort of surprising is that its three-day weekend haul came to $83.3 million. Which is not terrible for an opening weekend, but for Star Wars? That’s really soft. You’ll see a lot of whinging going on from various analysts about this (Deadline is acting like the sky is on fire) – we’ll do our own deep dive about Solo’s opening tomorrow. Needless to say, the folks at CAA who rep director Ron Howard, co-writer Lawrence Kasdan, and stars Alden Ehrenreich and Emilia Clarke aren’t dancing in the streets about this result. Going forward the film has a couple weeks without much competition until June 22nd when Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom opens, so it could gain some ground there. You can read our review here.
In second place with $53.5 million is Deadpool 2; this is a 66% drop from last week. The film has now made $220 million domestically. Expect it to hang out in the second or third place until Jurassic World.
In third place with $17 million was Avengers: Infinity War, whose domestic total is now hitting $627 million domestically. Worldwide the film has now made $1.9 billion, keeping it in the fourth largest global release of all time. In fourth place with $9.4 million is the counter-progammer Book Club. Coming in fifth with $5.1 million is Life of the Party.
Outside the top five – Breaking In, the Gabrielle Union home invasion thriller, came in sixth place, while Show Dogs came in seventh continuing to bomb and bomb hard (probably due to a problematic subplot that is getting recut). The Overboard remake came in eighth, breakout horror hit A Quiet Place came in ninth, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg documentary RBG kept its place in tenth.
Next Week: Blockbusters get a break as Johnny Knoxville and his Jackass antics return to theaters with Action Point, Shailene Woodley gets stranded at sea in Adrift, and Logan Marshall-Green becomes a cyborg in Upgrade.
