Box Office Round Up - 4-30-2018
That’s right true believers – Avengers: Infinity War took the top spot this weekend with a record shattering $250 million haul. That’s the highest domestic opening of all time – beating out Star Wars: The Force Awakens opening take of $247.9 million. And that’s not all; it also took the record for highest opening weekend world wide with $650 million. The film’s box office success even helped bolster Black Panther, which jumped from eighth place last week to fifth place this week. I’m not sure that’s ever happened before. The halls of WME and CAA are filled with shouts of “excelsior” this morning. WME will be hooting as they represent directors Joe and Anthony Russo. While CAA represents stars Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, and Zoe Saldana.
What will be interesting going forward is to see if Infinity War will have the legs of Black Panther. I suspect that it will make more money than king T’Challa’s film, but I don’t think it’ll have the staying power or cultural impact.
In second place, holding on to the number two spot with $11 million, was A Quiet Place – the only film to make double digits in the face of Infinity War. Coming in third with $8.1 million was I Feel Pretty. In fourth place with $7.1 million was Rampage, which had a fairly significant drop from last week. And as mentioned before, in fifth place was Black Panther with $4.4 million. This is the second time two Marvel films have been in the top ten together. The last time was ten years ago in 2008 with Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk.
Outside the top five – Super Troopers 2 dropped to sixth place, Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare fell to seventh, Blockers came in eighth, Ready Player One came in ninth, and Traffik came in tenth.
Next Week: Jason Reitman, Diablo Cody, and Charlize Theron team up again for Tully, Anna Faris goes Overboard, and the horror film Bad Samaritan comes to theaters. It’s highly doubtful that any of them will over take Avengers but anything is possible.
