Box Office Round Up - 4-23-2018

A shocking upset! A Quiet Place snuck up on Rampage and narrowly took the number one spot this weekend with a $22 million haul. This is exciting for folks like me, as this type of thing rarely happens. Actually, the last time this happened, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle overtook Star Wars: The Last Jedi – so maybe “rarely” is an understatement. But don’t count the giant gorilla out as Rampage took second place with $21 million. I suspect that the two films will continue to be neck and neck even with Avengers: Infinity War stomping on everything in its path next week.

In third place was the Amy Schumer starring comedy I Feel Pretty with $16 million. This was a little ahead of most analysts’ predictions but still within expectations. And while it’s not a runaway hit, it’ll probably kick around the top ten for a bit. This should make UTA happy as they rep star Schumer, co-writer and director Abby Kohn and co-star Emily Ratajkowski. WME reps co-star Michelle Williams.

The long awaited sequel to Super Troopers – Super Troopers 2 – came in fourth place with $15 million, which is ahead of expectations and the entire budget of the film. Like I Feel Pretty this should be kicking around the top ten for awhile. This should make the reps of comedy troop Broken Lizard very happy including UTA – repping Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, and Erik Stolhanske, CAA reps Steve Lemme, and Echo Lake Management reps Paul Soter.

In fifth place with $7 million was Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare which dropped from third place last week.

Outside the top five – Ready Player One dropped to sixth place, Blockers dropped to seventh. While Black Panther dropped to eighth. If Black Panther stays where it is for next week it will be the second time Marvel has had two films in the top ten at the same time, the last time was in 2008 with Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk.

In ninth place was newcomer Traffik with $3.7 million. Which is in line with expectations.

Next Week: For ten years the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been leading up to this – Avengers: Infinity War hits the big screen – and general audiences finally get to understand just what it is the deal with the purple dude in all those post credit scenes. Not unexpectedly everyone is giving this movie a wide birth, as it will probably break several records next weekend. What will be interesting to see is if the film will have the staying power of Black Panther.
