Box Office Round-Up ~ 9/2/25

With no KPop competition over the long Labor Day Weekend, Weapons was able to return to the top spot at the box office in its fourth weekend, grossing $10.4 million to pass $132 million overall domestically. It’s the third horror movie to clear $100 million this year (after Sinners and Final Destination: Bloodlines), which bodes well for any similar movies on the horizon for September and October (including next weekend’s The Conjuring: Last Rites).

As it happens, second place also went to a well-received horror movie, albeit one from 1975. A little movie called Jaws enjoyed a 50th anniversary re-release to end the summer blockbuster season (a season Jaws arguably created all those years ago). Grossing $9.6 million in what is technically its 2620th weekend in theaters, Jaws is just one more weekend shy of clearing $500 million domestically. Of course, it has over a billion dollar adjusted for inflation, so there has been and probably always will be an audience for one of the best and most profitable movies of all time.

Crime thriller Caught Stealing, from director Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan, The Whale), debuted in third place with $7.8 million. It’s the second-best opening weekend of Aronofsky’s career after Noah in 2014. Fourth place went to Freakier Friday, which grossed $6.7 million. In fifth place, Jay Roach’s The Roses opened with $6.7 million. Based on the 1981 novel and a remake of the 1989 film (both titled The War of the Roses) starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, the new take on the ensemble dark comedy (now featuring Benedict Cumberbatch, Olivia Colman and Andy Samberg) likely played counterprogramming for older audiences looking for something (comparatively) on the lighter side of Weapons, Caught Stealing and Jaws.
