Welcome to the Series Snapshot, a weekly deep dive into the shows topping the streaming charts.

Netflix’s teen adventure series Outer Banks takes a victory lap this week, as it tops the charts again in viewership. Its fifth and final season released on August 20th as a binge-drop, and continues to see high engagement, though less than previous seasons, and as a whole, the final installment is performing poorly, especially with its generally loyal fanbase. The biggest gripes seem to stem from the death of a fan-favorite character, frustrating plot holes, and unrealistic circumstances even for the heightened action-adventure series. Few critics have reviewed the show, but of those that have, they seem to voice some agreement, despite rating the series highly. Regardless of the underwhelming conclusion, Netflix has greenlit a prequel series, Kildare, to be set twenty years before the events of Outer Banks, which is now in development and likely releasing early in 2028. Outer Banks stars Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Rudy Pankow, Madison Bailey, and Drew Starkey, and was created by Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke.

In a stunning upset, Furious is dethroned this week by reality fashion competition Project Runway, which launched its twenty-second season earlier in July. While Furious has been an absolute streaming powerhouse, its format of single episode releases have audiences mostly on the same page, contributing a single view with each new episode, however, Project Runway fans have streamed the entire series this week to get caught up for the fashion-packed finale on September 10th. The addition of modeling legend Tyra Banks, who joins this season as a permanent judge, has seen viewership surge in tandem. Along with Banks, the panel is rounded out by Heidi Klum, Law Roach, and Nina Garcia, editor-in-chief for Elle magazine. As the series has slowly whittled down contestants, only five remain as the competition heats up following a shocking, twist double-elimination. Season twenty-two has been highly divisive; longtime fans bemoan a drama-over-substance direction that makes the show feel dumbed down and less about artistry, as well as a bizarre premiere episode that eliminated six contestants for outfits they didn’t even make on the show. Project Runway was created by Eli Holzman.

HBO’s Lanterns has proven a worthy successor to House of the Dragon for the time being, taking a second week as the top-streamed series. Lanterns adapts DC Comics’ superhero IP into a gritty detective drama, and has quickly earned glowing praise from critics and comic fans. The series’ magic lies in the excellent chemistry of its two leads, Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, whose characters Hal Jordan and John Stewart investigate a mass-shooting in the American heartland of Nebraska. When it turns out the perp is extra-terrestrial, the two discover its place in a wider pattern of cosmic events in the small town. The new series follows a weekly release schedule, which has built steady momentum and anticipation which will conclude on October 4th. DC Studios has already begun writing a season two arc, but it will ultimately come down to whether HBO wants to greenlight more episodes. Lanterns also stars Kelly MacDonald, Garret Dillahunt, and Nathan Fillion, and was created for television by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King.

Over at Amazon Prime, Reacher continues its winning streak for a third consecutive week. Adapted from Lee Child’s bestselling 2009 novel, Gone Tomorrow, season four has been updated for 2026, tweaking villains and major plot points as well as switching from New York City to Philadelphia to keep even dedicated book fans on their toes. Season four has received particularly high praise from critics and fans, who comment that the newest episodes showcase some of the best fight and action choreography in the entire series so far. Also receiving accolades is star Alan Ritchson, whose performance this season has taken on a new level of nuance and even vulnerability for the seemingly invincible Jack Reacher. Reacher releases new episodes every Wednesday with a finale episode set for September 16th. That same day, Reacher spinoff series Neagley will premiere, led by Ritchson’s co-star Maria Sten, and Amazon has given the greenlight for a fifth season in the pipeline. Reacher also stars Sydelle Noel and Kevin Corrigan, and was developed by Nick Santora.

Highly acclaimed comedy-drama Ted Lasso scores another goal at AppleTV, well underway with its fourth season. The new season serves as a soft reboot and sees veteran coach Ted tackle the challenges of coaching women’s soccer, and fans have been quick to embrace the changeup. Episodes are well paced and clip along at around forty-five minutes, and with a slightly shorter season, the series crossed the halfway point this week with its fifth episode. Much of the original main cast returns, including Jason Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, Juno Temple, Brendan Hunt, and Jeremy Swift, who effortlessly slip back into their roles. Critics have warmly received the directional pivot, and note that the show has reclaimed its core underdog story while masterfully addressing disparities in women’s sports, all while cutting filler and nailing its heartfelt humor. Ted Lasso has not yet been greenlit for a fifth season, but many speculate that further seasons are likely, given the show’s popularity. Ted Lasso was created by Jason Sudeikis, Bill Lawrence, Brendan Hunt, and Joe Kelly.

Disney is also experiencing a soccer-surge with their recent popular animated series Dragon Striker, which is the most streamed series on the platform this week. Dragon Striker is about a young boy named Key (Akshay Kumar) who competes in “Goratama”, a five-on-five soccer like game. The twist is, all the kids have unique powers- or “tama”, that influence the game in dynamic ways. Key’s power is the legendary Dragon Tama, but its volatility is both a blessing and curse. The series premiered via binge drop in mid-June, but its rise in popularity had been a steady trickle until recent aggressive algorithm pushing from Disney. It was also recently greenlit for a second season, which was teased at Anime Expo and is slated for early 2027. Dragon Striker receives the bulk of its praise for its art direction and painstaking animation, with many likening it to Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender. The series also benefits from powerhouse composer Kevin Penkin’s original cinematic scoring, which elevates Dragon Striker further with ambient electronic soundscapes. Dragon Striker also stars Rebecca LaChance, Yeukayi Ushe, Waylon Jacobs, and Evanna Lynch, and was co-created by Sylvain Dos Santos and Charles Lefebvre.
