Series Snapshot ~ 6/18/2026
Welcome to the Series Snapshot, a weekly deep dive into the shows topping the streaming charts.
At Netflix this week, three-part British crime drama The Witness clinches the most watched spot, ahead of Michael Jackson: The Verdict. The limited series is based on the tragic and sensationalized murder of Rachel Nickell in 1992. The Witness dramatizes the surrounding events and initial police investigation, which resulted in a wrongful suspect. Years later Rachel’s adult son Alex investigates on his own after the correct man is convicted, and discovers that a series of catastrophic police fumbles allowed his mother’s actual killer back on the streets to continue murdering. Alex uncovers a trail of negligence and failure, leading to one of the biggest and most humiliating police scandals in UK history. The Witness is widely praised by critics, who commend the series for a surprisingly tasteful presentation, but the show may have experienced a marketing mismatch; audiences expecting a tantalizing true-crime slasher were met with a somber examination of grief and a miscarriage of justice. The Witness stars Jordan Bolger, Max Fincham, and Eleanor Williams, and was created by Rob Williams.
Medical drama powerhouse General Hospital takes the top spot at Hulu, with Not Suitable for Work close behind. The long-running daytime soap often pulls big numbers, but as original series The Testaments begins to fall off after its finale, viewers begin to browse their homescreens, and General Hospital’s frequently released new episodes often drive it further up in the algorithm. In addition to a shortage in competitive programming, high-stakes cliffhangers and intersecting storylines have fans streaming in greater numbers. Recent episodes have received praise for their quick pacing and dialed-in acting performances, particularly those of Laura Wright and Katelyn MacMullen who emotionally anchor the serial drama. General Hospital also stars Maurice Bernard, Steve Burton, and Genie Francis, and was created by Frank and Doris Hursley. New episodes release every weekday at 2PM on ABC, and 8PM on Hulu.
Once again, irreverent animated sci-fi series Rick and Morty is the most watched series on HBO Max. The series’ new episodes recently began to release for subscribers in the United States, after airing through Adult Swim on cable. So far, only the pilot is available, but after eight seasons with increasingly complex lore, viewers are likely re-watching earlier episodes to refresh and recap. For most of its run, Rick and Morty has been enjoyed for its lampooning of television tropes, writer’s room meta humor, and nihilistic outlook. Season nine’s action packed debut featured stunning animation and particularly detailed setpieces, seeing the titular duo venture outside the “central finite curve”, and marking the return of a fan-favorite character. Later episodes focus more on the relationships and petty-drama within the Smith family. Fans have warmed to Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden, who took over voicing Rick and Morty respectively following co-creator Justin Roiland’s departure. Rick and Morty was also created by Dan Harmon, and stars Ian Cardoni, Harry Belden, Chris Parnell, Sarah Chalke, and Spencer Grammer
Amazon Prime original series Off Campus has some friendly competition – losing its streak to new romance drama Every Year After. Adapted from author Carley Fortune’s bestseller Every Summer After, it follows two star-crossed lovers through two timelines; their summers from age thirteen to eighteen, and their present day age of nearly-thirty. The new series has received a range of critical reactions, with some appreciating its low-stakes coziness, and others pointing out blatant writing flaws and try-hard dialogue. It also boasts a strong core and ensemble cast, featuring the pairing of Gen Z beloved Sadie Soverall and Matt Cornett, though despite charismatic performances, many find it hard to buy the early-twenties actors as both age fifteen and thirty within the same season. Every Year After is the latest in “book-tok” hits, and comes with a baked-in audience of fans from the novel, mostly women aged eighteen to thirty-five. The creative team of Amy Harris and Leila Gerstein have stated their intention to adapt more novels into a multi-season franchise, but Amazon has not officially greenlit yet.
AppleTV’s Your Friends & Neighbors is a major victory from the platform, extending its perfect run throughout its entire second season for twelve weeks straight. Reception to early episodes was good, but hesitant, with some feeling the season was moving too slowly. As the plot unfolded and James Marsden won over audiences with his eccentric and subversive big bad, billionaire Owen Ashe, the originally simple cat-burglar premise expanded into a much larger, higher-stakes plot. Season two’s shocking twists and major cliffhanger have audiences primed for season three, which is in production, and will likely air sometime around April of 2027. Your Friends & Neighbors has also hit a highly coveted demographic sweet spot, about a fifty-fifty split between male and female viewers, according to Nielsen data, which often predicts both a greater cultural impact and financial return. Your Friends & Neighbors stars Jon Hamm, Amanda Peet and James Marsden, and was created by Jonathan Tropper.
Adjusted for Hulu bundling, Disney Plus’ most watched series this week is ABC procedural crime comedy High Potential. About a month ago, ABC unveiled their fall lineup, and in a rare move, decided to push High Potential’s third season to January of 2027, instead of fall of this year. This is uncommon for high-performing shows, as networks often scramble to get new episodes out, however, Will Trent and The Rookie delayed their new seasons to avoid a mid-season break with huge success. As shows like Maul: Shadow Lord and The Testaments wrap, fans are waiting to binge the entire second season of High Potential. The award winning series, led by Kaitlin Olson was lauded by critics for capturing the nostalgic formatting of early 2000’s procedural programming like “Psych” and “White Collar”, pivoting from modern grit and playing to Olson’s strengths like comedic timing, dramatic vulnerability and chaotic charm. High Potential also stars Daniel Sunjata and Javicia Leslie, and was created by Drew Goddard.
