Things rarely go exactly according to plan in the rink. After a miraculous first season for the Vegas Golden Knights behind the great Marc-Andre Fleury in net, the hockey world expected a defensive showdown in this Stanley Cup Finals against the Washington Capitals. Instead, Fleury has given up seven goals through two games and the Knights are heading to the nation's capital tied 1-1 after just their second home playoff loss. Goalie Braden Holtby made a miraculous stick save for the Capitals with two minutes remaining to preserve a 3-2 lead and ensure the Caps would win their first Stanley Cup game in the franchise's 40+ year history. The high-powered duo of William Karlsson and Jonathan Marchessaultso unstoppable all season long, couldn't find the net in this one despite a plethora of chances on the power play and even one 5-on-3.

The Capitals still have plenty to be concerned about. Forward Evgeny Kuznetsov, their leading point scorer in these playoffsleft the game with an arm injury and did not return. His status for Game 3 on Saturday is uncertain. Franchise centerpiece Alex Ovechkin picked up a point in each game in Vegas, including his first career Stanley Cup goal, and will have to shoulder an even greater portion of the offensive load if Kuznetsov can't go. Washington is at least prepared for this, having lost centre Nicklas Backstrom during their second round series against Pittsburgh before pulling it out.The Caps also got an unexpected lift from defenseman Brooks Orpik, who scored his first goal in over two years and became the oldest defenseman to score in the Stanley Cup in over a decade. It's hard to rely on that going forward. In any case, the Capitals have to feel good after heading home with a split, with that elusive Stanley Cup right within their grasp.
