Box Office Round-Up ~ 9/21/26

Turns out it was third times the charm for Resident Evil reboots. After the end of the six-film Milla Jovovich-led series in 2017, the video game franchise has seen its share of false starts in live action, including Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City in 2021 and a single season Netflix series in 2022. The winning ingredient turned out to be director Zach Cregger.

Coming off the critical and box office successes of Barbarian and Weapons, Cregger’s new Resident Evil reboot opened with a debut gross of $60.1 million. That’s more than double the next best opening weekend in the franchise, Resident Evil: Afterlife’s $26.6 million back in 2010. It’s another big win for both horror movies and video game adaptations, two oft-maligned genres that have seen a major resurgence in recent years.

Practical Magic 2 moved to second place in its second weekend with $12.1 million, reaching $50 million domestically ($4 million more than the original’s domestic gross in 1998, for the record). In third place, Spider-Man: Brand New Day finally became the highest grossing movie of all time in the U.S., passing Star Wars: The Force Awakens with an eighth-weekend gross of $6.4 million and a domestic total of $944 million total.

The Odyssey took fourth place after ten weekends, grossing $4.9 million to reach $609 million total in the U.S., while Coyote vs. Acme held onto fifth place with $4.4 million to pass the $50 million mark overall.

New releases for the final weekend of September include the re-release of Avengers: Endgame, along with DreamWorks Animation’s Forgotten Island, Brad Pitt survival thriller Heart of the Beast and the Robert Pattinson-led Chris Hansen biopic Primetime.
