Box Office Round-Up ~ 8/3/26

It would appear that your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man did not get the various memos about box office downturns and superhero fatigue. Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the fourth in the Tom Holland-led series of standalone MCU Spider-Man movies, landed in theaters to close out July with a staggering $360 million opening weekend.

This is the biggest opening weekend of any domestic release ever, beating out Avengers: Endgame’s $357 million debut back in the spring of 2019 (a very different era for movie theaters). And with an international opening of $581 million, Brand New Day is just $59 million shy of the billion-dollar mark after just one weekend in theaters. Considering only the combined powers of Deadpool & Wolverine have come close to these numbers in recent years, it speaks to the enduring popularity of Spider-Man as a character that he has defied the current downward trend in superhero movies on the big screen.

To move from modern myth to ancient myth, The Odyssey still managed to earn an impressive $51 million in its third weekend at the box office, putting it just shy of $400 million overall in the U.S., the third highest grossing movie of the year so far. The top grossing movie of the year, Toy Story 5, held on to third place with $6.7 million, while Minions & Monsters and Moana rounded out the field with $6 million and $5.6 million. (And no disrespect to The Odyssey or Toy Story 5, but it’s likely only a matter of another week or two before Spider-Man passes both on the box office charts for the year.)

The first full weekend in August is perhaps a wisely clear field to avoid competing with Spidey, with three smaller releases hitting theaters… Ice Cream Man from horror director Eli Roth, romcom One Night Only from director Will Gluck and Super Troopers 3, comedy group Broken Lizard’s latest followup to their 2001 cult classic.
