Box Office Round-Up ~ 8/17/26

Until further notice, it would appear the box office status quo is Spider-Man, Odysseus and then everyone else. Spider-Man: Brand New Day won the weekend for a third time in a row, grossing $70.7 million to reach $786 million domestically, the fourth highest grossing movie ever in the U.S. Spidey may not quite reach the top spot, held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ $936 million, but it also became the eighth movie to clear $2 billion worldwide. A massive success for Disney, Marvel and Sony, with plenty of momentum left before the summer is over.

In second place, The Odyssey grossed $23.6 million to pass the $500 million mark in the U.S. after five weekends. It’s now comfortably the second highest grossing R-rated movie ever, behind Deadpool & Wolverine and ahead of The Passion of the Christ.

Three new releases took up the rest of the top five. The End of Oak Street debuted in third place with $21 million, while PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie offered family-friendly dinosaurs in fourth place with $20.2 million. Music documentary Katseye: Wild Hearts took the fifth place spot with $3.9 million.

This coming weekend’s new releases include horror sequel Insidious: Out of the Further, ensemble comedy Spa Weekend, Jason Statham actioner Mutiny and the wide release of Anthony Bourdain biopic Tony.
