The Lead Sheet is your guide to this week’s new music - taking a look at newly released albums, who made them, and how listeners are responding.     

Global pop icon and actress Ariana Grande released her eighth studio album, Petal, to widely polarized critical reception. Her newest album has been seen by many as a major departure from her typical sound. Now she’s channeling rage and airing frustration with the industry and life in the public eye. Grande experiments with slower tempos, electro-chill and atmospheric R&B to create musical and emotional tension, and delivers a more subdued vocal performance in contrast with her famous high-note belting and runs. The album also features no guest artists to drive home the theme of feeling isolated and alone in a high-profile career. But unfortunately, apart from the hit single “Hate That I Made You Love Me”, Petal’s main critique is its overall monotony and lack of payoff. Those expecting Grande’s vocal peaks and powerful melodies were disappointed with the restraint, but listeners who might have preferred the new sound find Grande’s “rage” against celebrity life inauthentic and off-putting. However, in her defense, Grande has also announced she does not plan to tour this album, choosing instead to take time off from being at the center of Hollywood gossip. 

Texas native indie rock band Shearwater published their eleventh LP on Friday, titled The New World. The group emerged in the early 2000s with a rocky start, but have grown in popularity and refinement over the years. The New World is a reference to the parallel internet-world that has developed, and the massive and ironic disconnection that grew as a result. The record offers tangible experiences in nature as a spiritual panacea. To further this idea, frontman Jonathan Meiburg took field recordings of natural sounds across a variety of locations. The New World is a sonic pivot as well; Shearwater moves away from indie-rock strum patterns and choruses and towards an atmospheric, freeform soundscape-dominant space, with sweeping strings, and circular rhythms. Meiburg’s soaring falsetto adds an ethereal quality and effortlessly cuts through the wall of sound. The New World has received overwhelming praise from both fans and critics, and for the first time in eight years, the group will embark on a tour for eighteen shows across the UK and Europe, starting in the Netherlands on Halloween. 

Enigmatic fusion group Opus Kink launched their highly anticipated debut album, The Sweet Goodbye this week, after a few successful EPs and singles. Opus Kink is from Brighton, England and play a variety of genres like post-punk, jazz, country, and folk, but their defining characteristic is a vibrant horn section, composed of a saxophone and trumpet. The Sweet Goodbye was produced by Grammy award winning indie hitmaker and master engineer Craig Silvey, who worked with legendary indie-rock acts Arcade Fire and Florence and the Machine. Its sound is mainly post-punk and avant-jazz, but their “punk cabaret” live sound has been delicately tuned and mixed, and was recorded on vintage gear for a warmer analogue texture. The record is frantic and holds a sense of impending doom, with Angus Rogers’ vocals demonstrating dramatic range-flipping from intimate spoken-word to desperate shouts. Within the indie sphere The Sweet Goodbye is a solid success, but critics admit a lack of mainstream appeal. Opus Kink will tour in the UK and Europe October through November of 2026. 

Glasgow based alt-pop group Lucia and the Best Boys dropped their second studio album, Picking Petals to mostly positive reviews. Led by powerhouse frontwoman Lucia Fairfull, Picking Petals builds momentum from their 2023 debut album Burning Castles. Burning Castles followed a rigid electronic format firmly rooted in synth-pop sounds, but Picking Petals takes inspiration from their explosive live tours alongside finger-on-the-pulse indie acts like Wolf Alice and The Last Dinner Party. Picking Petals’ sound is expansive and high-energy, and infuses traditional Scottish music and instrumentation into its tracklist. The record’s second song, “Lonely Girl” features another iconic Scottish frontwoman: Lauren Mayberry. The lead singer for CHVRCHES lends her trademark pure vocals, and their native accents harmonize perfectly with gorgeous, celtic vowels. Critically, Picking Petals is seen as a leap of confidence for the group, and embraced as an authentic project that has listeners calling Lucia and the Best Boys the next big thing in indie music. Their album tour began July 31st, and will continue with concerts in Germany and the UK with a final performance on October 28.

After a sixteen year wait, legendary Manchester post-punkers The Durutti Column are back with their twentieth full album, Renascent. It seems a lot of musicians have noticed and taken inspiration from an apparent societal shift towards isolation and social apathy, and that is exactly what drove creative mastermind Vini Reilly back to the studio booth. Renascent focuses on ambiance, delivering lush compositions that pair acoustic piano with electric guitar, and jazz rhythms with a wide range of drum styles. The result is a deeply vulnerable, minimalist sound, that instead of raging against the machine, opens up and appeals to humanity. Vocals take a back seat, performing more as an organic instrument rather than a lyrical narrative. Reception is emphatically positive from most publications, who see Renascent as a triumphant return for the long-awaited group. Listeners connect with The Durutti Column’s open-hearted, genuine delivery, and are hopeful for more music, but due to ongoing health concerns, The Durutti Column has no current plans to tour in the future.
