The Lead Sheet ~ 3/31/2026
The Lead Sheet is your guide to this week’s new music - taking a look at newly released albums, who made them, and how listeners are responding.
After an eight year hiatus from album releases, Swedish pop icon Robyn returns this week with her ninth album, Sexistential. Once again collaborating with longtime producer Klas Ahlund, Sexistential is a return to Robyn’s high-energy early sound, while covering a range of present topics like life as a single mother, her recent experiences with IVF, and her newfound sexual renaissance. Sexistential takes inspiration from several other genres, like Eurotrance, Funk, and even sees Robyn rap on the album’s title track. The album’s nine songs are a quick listen, clocking in at just twenty-nine minutes, which some fans find frustrating given the long wait since 2018’s Honey. Critics praise Sexistentialism for its candid lyricism, mature approach to pop, and Robyn’s masterful blend of vulnerability with club-banger energy. Robyn will tour the new record in the UK and Europe in June and July, the United States in September, and Italy and Australia in October of this year.
The highly anticipated sophomore album for singer-songwriter Raye released on Friday to immediate positive reception. After a long career in the background for other major artists, Raye’s solo career exploded in 2022 with her massive viral hit “Escapism”. Her new album, titled This Music May Contain Hope explores new ground for the artist, creating a blend of big-band jazz, blues, and soul. The new project has a range of guests, including soul legend Al Green, Raye’s sisters and grandfather, and most interestingly, film score behemoth Hans Zimmer, who helped create the track “Click Clack Symphony”, a massive, dramatic orchestration. Critics and listeners praise the album highly, calling it a masterpiece, and a massive step up in scale since her debut album. The only consistent criticism is the album’s staggering length of seventy-one minutes, and interweaved “skits” of spoken words and monologues interspersed throughout the album, which some love and others find distracting. Raye is currently headlining the This Tour May Contain New Music tour, for 51 shows in the US and Europe.
It’s hard to think of a more controversial musician than Kanye West. To some, his music and lyrics are transcendent genius, but for many, his personality and recent antisemitic remarks stain his reputation beyond repair. West received valid criticism for praising Hitler and making a series of racist comments over the last few years, but has since apologized, blaming the behavior on his battle with mental health. It remains to be seen whether West will have a true redemption arc, and whether the public will be able to respect him on the level they once did. This week, West released his twelfth album Bully to mixed reviews. West has been teasing the album for several years, and early on it was even leaked to the public while still in early stages of production. Listeners lambasted the leak for its heavy reliance on AI vocals, and Kanye has since updated the album, proclaiming “NO AI” on social media. Thematically, Bully focuses on remorse and reflection, influenced by West’s time spent in isolation in Tokyo, Japan. Notable songs include “Father”, which features Travis Scott, and “Circles”, which features Don Toliver. Bully is a soulful attempt at recreating Ye’s early days in experimental hip-hop, but also showcases a variety of genres like latin-pop, gospel, and alt-rap. Kanye West will tour the new album this May through August in cities throughout the world.
Longtime bassist for Red Hot Chili Peppers, Flea, released his first full length solo album this week, titled Honora. However, for Honora, Flea recaptures his early roots in music, playing Jazz on the trumpet. Flea re-trained his skills for two years prior to recording, and in an interview with the New York Times stated he was “prepared to fail”. However, Honora is getting great reception critically. Honora departs from Flea’s rock image, and lands in sophisticated, ambient electro-jazz. The ten track album features six original songs, and several covers of greats like Frank Ocean, Funkadelic, and Jimmy Webb. Additionally, Honora has two exciting features- with Thom Yorke of Radiohead, and Nick Cave each contributing to tracks “Traffic Lights” and “Wichita Lineman” respectively. Flea himself also sings on several tracks. While some jazz purists may be critical of Flea’s technical skills on the trumpet, many listeners praise the album’s sincerity, and don’t feel the need for flare. Flea will perform a limited tour in May with a specialized group, Flea and the Honora band, in select countries, including the US, Canada, Germany, The Netherlands, The UK and France.
Popstar-producer and global hitmaker Charlie Puth dropped his fourth studio album, Whatever’s Clever! this week, to generally positive reviews. The new LP is a blend of pop and yacht rock, and Puth collaborated with two of the most well known contributors to the genre, Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins in developing its sound. To lean into this aesthetic, Puth moves away from digital samples, opting for warmer live recorded riffs and chords, even featuring Kenny G on the saxophone. Puth describes the album as “Yacht Rock 2026”, or his take on what it would sound like if it had had its hey-day, today. Listeners note the album sounds expensive, as well as fresh and nostalgic. Going hand in hand with the yacht rock theme, Whatever’s Clever ushers in Puth’s new “dad-music” era, celebrating the recent birth of Puth’s son. Puth also explores self-awareness, confessing to exaggerating in the past in an effort to boost his status, as well as the disillusionment of childhood fantasies. Puth will kick off a world tour for the album starting in April in the US, and moving to Europe in June and July.
