Series Snapshot ~ 3/26/2026
Welcome to the Series Snapshot, a weekly deep dive into the shows topping the streaming charts.
Once again, One Piece has a firm lead as Netflix’s top show this week, ahead of Virgin River and Beauty in Black. The popular anime adaptation seems to have found a sweet spot where other live-action remakes fail, avoiding melodrama by preserving the cartoon’s tongue-in-cheek humor and tone, with quick pacing and no filler. The series also benefits from its stellar casting, with Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy, and Emily Rudd and Mackenyu as his compadres Nami and Roronoa, who have charmed audiences as the iconic trio. Critics and fans note the new season has a noticeably expanded budget, and ambitiously tackles One Piece’s high-fantasy atmosphere with great success. Production for season three is already underway in South Africa, with a quicker production turnaround than the gap between seasons one and two. One Piece was created by Matt Owens and Steven Maeda.
Also renewed for a third season is Hulu’s original series Paradise, which clinches another victory as most watched on the platform this week. Taking a bold risk by shifting genres for its second season, Paradise’s big gamble has paid off. Following the assassination of a fictional US president, Paradise reveals a top-secret underground bunker for twenty-five thousand of society’s wealthy elites to wait out the apocalypse. In season two, Secret Service agent Xavier Collins, played masterfully by Sterling K. Brown, finds himself at the center of conspiracy and moral conflict, and learns his wife Teri, (Enuka Okuma) may have survived the environmental disaster, as well as millions of others. While some found the shift from political mystery to high concept sci-fi thriller jarring, most viewers are on board. Critics praise the show’s emotional arcs, but also scrutinize the series for occasional clunky dialogue. Paradise was created by Dan Fogelman, and season two’s finale will air Monday, March 30.
HBO’s massively successful medical drama, The Pitt, continues to hold its spot at the top, with near perfect scores on several aggregates. The Pitt commonly receives praise from critics and medical professionals for its accurate depictions of its “day in the life” ER presentation, and scored several Emmy Award wins in its first season. Season two continues this momentum, further developing beloved characters from the original release. Led by television veteran Noah Wyle, The Pitt was also a major breakout for lesser known actors like Patrick Ball, who plays fan-favorite Dr. Langdon, as well as Katherine LaNasa, who won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress and Taylor Dearden who plays Dr. Mel King with understated vulnerability. There are just four episodes left of the season, with a finale set to air April 16th. The Pitt has been renewed for a third season, aiming for a January 2027 release and was created by R. Scott Gemmill.
Amazon Prime’s gritty animated comic book adaptation, Invincible is the service’s top show this week, after premiering its first three episodes of season four on March 18th. Invincible first impressed audiences for several reasons; an all star cast of J.K. Simmons, Steven Yeun, and Sandra Oh, an intriguing superhero premise, and a shocking degree of violence. Invincible follows Omni-Man, a superman-esque hero who goes rogue, killing the series’ analogue for the justice league in the pilot episode. His son Mark (Yeun) inherits some of Omni-Man’s powers, and chooses to defend the Earth where Omni-Man would conquer it. The series has had some ups and downs, including particularly lengthy delays in production during COVID, but has performed consistently well with audiences and critics. While season three had cut some corners on animation, season four’s debut has ratcheted up the quality, and viewers are excited to begin the “Viltrumite War” arc, often cited as a high point in the original graphic novels. Additionally, Lee Pace joins the cast as Grand Regent Thragg, to the delight of Invincible fans. Invincible, both the animated series and comic book, were created by Robert Kirkman.
After dipping in viewership briefly and losing its spot to Shrinking, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is back on top for AppleTV this week. Season two is about halfway through, with episode five of ten airing Friday evening. The series remains a strong draw thanks to its high-quality CG effects, unique casting of father-son duo Kurt and Wyatt Russell, sharing a character in different time periods, and the introduction of a threatening new monster, “Titan X”. “Monarch” is a secret global operation tasked with monitoring and defending against new titan threats, though some titans receive a neutral respect, like Kong and Godzilla. The series switches between a 1950’s timeline with Wyatt Russell, playing the young colonel Lee Shaw, and 2015 with the actor’s father Kurt in the same role. There’s no official confirmation of a third season for Monarch, however, an untitled prequel series starring Wyatt Russell will begin production as early as summer of this year. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters was created by Chris Black and Matt Fraction.
Over at Disney Plus, Love Story: John F. Kennedy and Carolyn Bessette has absolutely dominated the charts and is now FX’s most watched limited series ever. The Ryan Murphy project receives consistent praise for its encapsulation of 90’s celebrity culture, fashion, and the high profile relationship of the titular duo. Love Story’s leads, Paul Anthony Kelly and Sarah Pidgeon have launched into stardom, recreating the couple’s turbulent romance with energy and nuance. However, not everyone is a fan, including actress Daryl Hannah, who is portrayed in the series and criticized Love Story as “not even a remotely accurate description”, as well as members of the Kennedy family, who explain that they were not contacted for input during the show’s production. While a second season hasn’t been announced, fans speculate on which couple Love Story might tackle next, potentially John Lennon and Yoko Ono, or Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love. Love Story was created by Connor Hines and Ryan Murphy.
