Series Snapshot ~ 9/10/2026

This week Netflix’s most watched series was the new true crime documentary Death of the Pastor’s Wife. The three-part series examines the life and death of South Carolinian worship leader Mica Miller through real archival footage spanning over a decade. The bizarre case was officially ruled as a suicide, but a number of confusing and suspicious circumstances, including a haunting warning from Miller just before her death that seemed to hint at foul play leave many unconvinced. Death of the Pastor’s Wife is a comprehensive deep dive into Mica and her husband John-Paul, including journal entries, text messages, home-videos and interviews with Mica’s immediate friends and family. The gripping docuseries is scoring well with critics and audiences, who have on the whole appreciated a shifting trend in true-crime- not glorifying the violent, but humanizing the victims. Additionally, viewers express outrage at the police ruling and details of abuses suffered by Mica before her passing, but JP Miller still has upcoming federal cases that may prove enlightening. Death of the Pastor’s Wife was directed and produced by Julia Willoughby Nason and Michael Gasparro

Hulu also sees a big true crime spike this week, with ABC’s 20/20 taking their top spot. The news program had been covering the high-profile murder case around Lindsay Clancy, which was recently declared a mistrial by its judge. Following a lengthy 11-1 split jury deliberation, which lasted for seven full days without progress. The nation seems equally divided on the case, with many supporting the running theory around lack of motive, and others disregarding insanity as a convenient but improbable defense. Immediately after the mistrial ruling, 20/20 quickly pushed a special episode within hours with live coverage and details of the trial to bring everyone up to speed. Ratings soared as viewers tuned in, many playing catch up and others following the trial daily. Critical reception is also polarized- some feel ABC showed explicit biases toward the defense, but others praised it for giving medical perspectives on the rare but documented postpartum psychosis. 20/20 is anchored by David Muir and Deborah Roberts, and was originally created by Roone Arledge.

At HBO, Lanterns continues to dominate the cultural conversation, anchoring the platform’s Sunday night lineup as the top series for three weeks straight. The series’ grounded, detective procedural format has proven a winning formula, taking loose inspiration from True Detective as its spin on the superhero genre. Releasing weekly has also given rise to online discussions and fan theories as Lanterns continues to unfold, crossing its season midpoint this week. Praise for the series leads- Kyle Chandler, playing the cynical, world weary Hal Jordan, and Aaron Pierre, who portrays the driven rookie John Stewart, continues to pour in with enthusiasm. The dynamic duo have formidable screen chemistry, finding new respect for one another as the cosmic conspiracy deepens. Lanterns season finale will air October 4th, after which HBO will assess a potential greenlight for more seasons, though the writers room is already well active with rough outlines of what a second season might look like. Lanterns also stars Kelly MacDonald and Garrett Dillahunt, and was developed by Chris MundyDamon Lindelof, and Tom King.

Now on its fourth consecutive week as Amazon Prime Video’s top series, Reacher is ramping up as it approaches its finale on September 16th. Engagement is high amongst fans, who have called season four of the series the best and bloodiest installment yet. Amazon has made major investments in the franchise, and the momentum will continue with an expanded universe; highly anticipated spin-off series Neagley will air immediately after Reacher’s season finale, to star Maria Sten, who was noticeably absent from Reacher for this adventure. Alan Ritchson has won over audiences with his take on the character through his enormous physique, deadpan delivery, and this season, nuanced reveals of cracks in his tough-guy armor, showing moments of vulnerability for the otherwise unflappable Jack Reacher. Season five production is well underway, with a tentative release in late 2027, and will adapt Lee Child’s twentieth novel, Make Me. This season of Reacher also stars Sydelle Noel and Kevin Corrigan, and was developed by Nick Santora

AppleTV’s Silo has been neck-and-neck with Ted Lasso over the last few weeks, but this week the sci-fi series takes the lead in global viewership, while Ted Lasso defends its top spot in the U.S. Silo’s ten-episode third season concluded with its explosive finale on September 4th. Ratings were through the roof, for its final episode, “Troy”, which is currently the second-highest rated episode of an AppleTV series ever on IMDB, trailing only behind the season one finale of Severance. Viewers who had expressed some frustration with pacing earlier in season three seem to be satisfied with how the finale episode merged the dual timeline structure, and with Juliette’s memories returned, she sets up for season four with a declaration of war on Silo 1. The final season is entirely shot already, having wrapped in March, and is now in a painstaking post-production phase as the editing team works on visual effects. Season four is set to premiere July 9 2027. Silo stars Rebecca FergusonCommonTim RobbinsHarriet Walter, and Chinaza Uche, and was adapted by Graham Yost.

Due to an interesting Halo effect and aggressive algorithm pushing, Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord returns from the outer rim this week as the top streamed series. Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu was a major blockbuster earlier this year, but only just arrived to the streaming platform. As viewers, old and new, tuned into the app to watch the film, many sought more Star Wars content, causing the recent and highly rated animated series to see a synergistic surge. Additionally, Maul - Shadow Lord is the first recommended content during the credits of the movie, and was even set to begin auto-playing after the credits roll. Maul - Shadow Lord is a particularly gritty segment of the Star Wars universe, but was embraced for its mature tone and stark violence, rarely sugarcoating sequences to be more family friendly. Viewers felt respected by the show’s portrayal of the fan-favorite villain, and a second season was greenlit, which is now in production and will air in the second half of 2027. Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord stars Gideon Adlon and Sam Witwer, and was created by Dave Filoni
