Welcome to the Series Snapshot, a weekly deep dive into the shows topping the streaming charts.

This week, the final season of popular teen adventure series Outer Banks released as a binge-drop on Netflix, and quickly launched to the top spot in viewership. Outer Banks follows two groups of North Carolinian teens- the working class “Pogues” and wealthy “Kooks” as they compete in lethal treasure hunts for priceless artifacts. Each season tends to focus on one treasure hunt, and each new discovery leaves clues to the next big score. Sometimes described as The Goonies crossed with The O.C., Outer Banks has been largely embraced by fans and critics as an unrealistic, but massively fun adventure that sucks viewers in with cliffhanger endings and constantly raising stakes. Much like National Treasure, it weaves history and fantasy together, exploring legends like “El Dorado” and “Blackbeard’s Treasure”, but with a sun-drenched, beach-babe aesthetic. For its fifth and final season, fans have scored it highly, but critics are quick to point out somewhat large plotholes and messy writing in the wake of a key character’s demise. Outer Banks was created by Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke, and stars Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Rudy Pankow, Madison Bailey, and Drew Starkey.

At Hulu, Furious continues to dominate the charts with consistent high marks from audiences and critics. The cat-and-mouse thriller is a bonafide hit, and as it enters its fourth week as Hulu’s top watched program, viewers eagerly look forward to the season finale next Monday. Furious is often praised for its delicate handling of trauma, female rage, and for its powerful script, which subverts cliches and delivers sardonic humor with biting dialogue. Stars Emmy Rossum and Lola Petticrew have quickly won over viewers with their captivating lead performances, and the auxiliary cast of Jake Lacy, Scoot McNairy and Quincy Tyler Bernstine are lauded as pitch-perfect casting in their roles as detectives. The story is an adaptation of the 1987 film, Black Widow, and despite the series’ success, it is for that reason Hulu has yet to renew for a second season. Doing so would require an entirely new case for protagonist Alice Black, though reception has been so excellent, further seasons would likely perform well. As predicted, now that HBO’s massive flagship House of the Dragon has wound down, new superhero series Lanterns has taken the weekly top spot. The new series adapts DC Comics’ Green Lantern into a gritty detective drama, and premiered August 16th. For the unfamiliar, in the DC universe, the Green Lanterns are like intergalactic beat cops who patrol the universe’s 3600 sectors (Earth is in sector 2814). Their duties range from intercepting black-market alien tech to fighting space pirates. The HBO series however is more True Detective than Star Trek, and stars Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as Earth’s Lanterns, Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Critical reception thus far is highly positive, with particular praise for Chandler and Pierre’s dynamic chemistry, and its fresh direction for DC. It’s unclear if Lanterns will pursue more seasons, but Pierre is confirmed to reprise his role for the upcoming DC film Man of Tomorrow. The series follows a weekly release format, with each of its first season’s eight episodes airing Sunday nights through October 4th. Lanterns was developed for television by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, and also stars Kelly MacDonald and Garret Dillahunt.

Amazon’s tough-guy action series Reacher takes another win after launching its fourth season earlier this month. This season adapts Lee Child’s thirteenth Reacher novel, Gone Tomorrow, and sees the setting shift to Philadelphia. Shot partially on location, Philly locals will recognize city landmarks throughout the season, though much of this is intercut with cleverly disguised Ontario, Canada. This time around, Jack Reacher is pulled into a political conspiracy after witnessing an apparent suicide on a transit line. Die-hard Reacher fans are already calling this the most action packed season yet. Season four is already halfway through- since launching its first three episodes and now there are just four episodes remaining with a finale set for September 16. Larger-than-life leading man Alan Ritchson continues to rake in the favor of critics and fans for his portrayal of the titular character, though his cohort Frances Neagley (Maria Sten) is notably absent this season, as her spin-off series Neagley will launch September 16 as well. Amazon has also greenlit Reacher for a fifth season, to be based on Child’s twentieth novel, Make Me. Reacher season four also stars Sydelle Noel and Kevin Corrigan, and was developed by Nick Santora.

Silo has regained a firm foothold over Ted Lasso at AppleTV, receiving the most views with just two episodes remaining in its exciting third season. Season three got audiences invested with a dual timeline narrative that gave context and backstory to Silo’s dystopian world, and has begun to answer burning questions in the minds of viewers. Critics have rated this season quite highly, but audiences were annoyed and frustrated with its deployment of an amnesia trope to pad out and slow down the plot’s pace. This makes sense, given the show is adapted from Hugh Howey’s original trilogy, but Silo is a four-season series. However, now that protagonist Juliette Nichols has regained her memory, which includes the life-changing fact that there are other silos, it’s a race against time to stop her silo’s rogue IT program from poisoning the entire colony. Silo’s season finale will air September 4th, and AppleTV has renewed Silo for its fourth and final season, which is set for summer of 2027. Silo was created for television by Graham Yost, and also stars Common, Tim Robbins, Harriet Walter, and Chinaza Uche.

Disney Plus has been doing well with National Geographic docuseries lately, and their newest success is Lion, a natural history four-parter that topped the charts this week. Directed by Jon Favreau, Lion was filmed over the course of four years, and follows the young lion Kio as he journeys from helpless cub to leader of the pride. Like The Lion King, Lion is scored by cinema legend Hans Zimmer, and is narrated by O.J. Lynch, who played Mufasa for years in the film’s professional stage adaptations. From a production standpoint, Lion was high risk, high reward; it is the longest a film crew has ever continuously filmed a single pride, and only half of lion cubs survive to adulthood, making the choice to follow Kio a massive gamble. However, that risk paid off, as critics and audiences give Lion overwhelming praise for its storytelling and immersive cinematography, using low angles to put viewers at “lion-level”. Lion was created by Jon Favreau and Mike Gunton, and co-directed by Faith Musembi, Joe Treddenick, Claire Arthur and Georgina Ward.
