Series Snapshot ~ 3/19/26
Welcome to the Series Snapshot, a weekly deep dive into the shows topping the streaming charts.
Netflix’s popular anime adaptation, One Piece, is back this week with season two, launching to the top of the platform’s streaming charts. Only slightly underperforming the debut of season one, One Piece: Into the Grand Line maintains strong viewership, and released its full season on March 10. Anime adaptations often flop (See Dragonball: Evolution, Death Note, The Last Airbender) so it’s all the more impressive that One Piece is already greenlit for a third season. This success is likely due to the involvement of original creator Eiichirô Oda, who serves as executive producer, a massive effects budget, and staunch adherence to the source material’s tone. Critics praise the series for its self-aware goofiness, lavish practical sets, and breakneck pacing, condensing roughly forty-four episodes of the animated series into just eight live action installments. One Piece stars Iñaki Godoy, Emily Rudd, and Mackenyu, and was created by Matt Owens and Steven Maeda.
Over at Hulu, political detective series turned post apocalypse sci-fi thriller Paradise tops the chart for another week, as it also officially renewed for a third season on March 17. The series took a bold left turn after season one, shifting genres and expanding the initial premise outward to encompass a sprawling, secret underground bunker for society’s elite class, and a massive tsunami that wipes out most of mankind. Paradise’s best assets are the performances of its main cast, in particular, Sterling K. Brown, who plays secret service agent Xavier Collins. Season one concluded with the revelation that millions survived the initial catastrophe, including his wife, Teri (Enuka Okuma). While many are split on the stark contrast in genre between seasons, Brown and Okuma’s fantastic chemistry is well earned and lauded by critics and audiences. Shailene Woodley and James Marsden round out the cast wonderfully with dialed-in performances amidst a high concept science-fiction setting. Paradise was created by Dan Fogelman.
HBO’s smash hit medical drama The Pitt is once again most watched, ahead of Rooster and DTF St. Louis. The Pitt first dazzled audiences with its gritty, unglamorous portrayal of life in the ER, with medical professionals commenting on the show’s accuracy on both technical and emotional levels. The series was nominated for and won several Grammy Awards, including Best Actor for Noah Wyle and Outstanding Supporting Actress for Katherine LaNasa. The Pitt also thrives due to its well-written realistic dialogue, acted without shmaltz from its supporting cast. Many viewers comment that the show feels almost like a documentary. The Pitt’s strong numbers have earned it a renewal for a third season, which Wyle confirmed is already being written. The Pitt also stars Patrick Ball and Taylor Dearden, and was created by R. Scott Gemmill.
Young Sherlock has found a strong foothold in viewership, keeping its spot at the top for a second week at Amazon Prime Video. Directed by Guy Ritchie, (who also directed the Robert Downey Jr. version) Young Sherlock takes the familiar character of Sherlock Holmes back to Oxford University at the age of 19, and re-imagines his famous rival James Moriarty not as an arch-nemesis, but close friend. Together, the two must clear their names from a murder investigation, involving the theft of priceless ancient scrolls. As the series unfolds, their famous feud is hinted at through their differing ethical stances. Sherlock and James (Hero Fiennes Tiffin and Dónal Finn) receive praise for their witty back and forths, and the show’s charm hinges on their excellent performances. All episodes of Young Sherlock are now available to stream. Young Sherlock was created by Matthew Parkhill, and based on the novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
After dipping in the charts while Monarch: Legacy of Monsters took the spotlight, AppleTV original Shrinking is back at the top this week, due to some shocking twists and heightened emotional stakes. The series centers around bereaved therapist Jimmy Laird, whose unraveling grief is portrayed deftly by Jason Segel. Following the tragic loss of his wife, Jimmy is disillusioned with the standard procedures of counseling, and begins telling his clients exactly what he thinks they should do with direct bluntness, to varying results. Often compared to Ted Lasso, which was also co-developed by Shrinking creators Brett Goldstein and Bill Lawrence, Shrinking is praised for its decency and humanity, examining the world through a variety of lenses. Harrison Ford is also a gem, playing Jimmy’s mentor Dr. Paul Rhoades with gruff compassion. Shrinking also stars Jessica Williams and Christa Miller, and has been renewed for a fourth season.
On Disney Plus, FX original Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette has remained uncontested as the number one series for now the fifth week in a row. The series has just one episode left before the series finale on March 26th, and audiences are enraptured. Based on the book Once Upon a Time by author Elizabeth Beller, Love Story examines the tumultuous romance between JFK Jr. (Paul Anthony Kelly) and Carolyn Bessette (Sarah Pidgeon). The two shine in their roles; Kelly is marked for his striking resemblance to his real life counterpart, and has quickly launched into stardom, and Pidgeon plays Bessette with nuance and humanity, in contrast to her media portrayal in the 90’s. Love Story has not been officially renewed, although as an anthology series, it will likely portray other famous couples at later dates. Love Story was created by Connor Hines and Ryan Murphy.
